About Us

History

The Potomac Lily Society was established in 1958 by a group of lily growers from the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. The original membership numbered 32 people and was a collection of novice and experienced gardeners as well as prominent horticulture professionals. The organizing meeting took place in the offices of Dr. Samuel L. Emsweller, a retired head horticulturist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the author of many books on horticultural topics. The Society was organized to provide a forum for lily growers to share information on growing, propagating, showing blooms and obtaining new lily stock.

Purpose

The Society was organized and is dedicated to promoting and encouraging the growing of Lilium. PLS strives to educate area gardeners on the basic principles of lily culture.
